Overview:
- The EUDR applies to companies that sell cocoa, coffee, or derived products to EU markets or export them from the EU.
- It requires that products do not originate from land deforested after December 31, 2020.
- The Rainforest Alliance provides EUDR compliance services to our certified partners at no extra cost.
Companies must comply with the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) by December 30, 2026.
The Rainforest Alliance has been combating deforestation for nearly 40 years. As leaders in the field, we are primed to help certified cocoa and coffee supply chain partners comply with EUDR requirements. We support our partners’ EUDR compliance with data and reports at no extra cost.
Our certification program is equipped with a range of tools and systems that can provide companies with information needed for compliance and risk assessments.
What is the EUDR?
The European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) is an EU regulation designed to ensure that products placed on the EU market or exported from the EU are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation.
To achieve EUDR compliance, companies must meet specific requirements related to traceability, legality, and due diligence. While the regulation applies to multiple commodities, the Rainforest Alliance’s EUDR support focuses on certified cocoa and coffee supply chains.
This regulation requires companies to prove that products are:
- Deforestation-free: They do not originate from land deforested after December 31, 2020.
- Legally produced: Their production complies with the applicable laws of the country of origin.
- Covered by a due diligence statement: Companies must assess and mitigate risks, then submit a due diligence statement on the EUDR information system.
How Certification Supports EUDR Compliance
The EUDR aligns closely with the approach embedded in the Rainforest Alliance Certification Program. While certification alone does not constitute EUDR compliance, it can provide companies with information that supports due diligence, risk assessments, and compliance efforts. In addition to the five EUDR-aligned requirements for certified cocoa and coffee farms, many requirements within the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard overlap with the EUDR’s legality requirements, creating a strong foundation for EUDR compliance and responsible sourcing.
For farmers: Demonstrating alignment with market requirements
All certified cocoa and coffee Farm Certificate Holders are audited against EUDR-aligned requirements as part of the certification process. Combined with our assurance system, traceability requirements, and deforestation risk processes, this helps producers demonstrate alignment with market expectations and strengthen access to supply chains seeking deforestation-free products.
For companies: Supporting due diligence and risk assessments
Traceability is the backbone of Rainforest Alliance certification. For eligible Identity Preserved and Mixed Identity Preserved supply chains, our systems and tools can provide information that supports EUDR due diligence and compliance efforts.
This includes:
- Deforestation risk assessments and mapping, supported by farm geolocation data and GeoJSON-compatible polygon files where available, to help companies assess deforestation risk and meet EUDR due diligence requirements
- Certification and assurance information that can support legality assessments.
- Traceability and chain-of-custody information for eligible Identity Preserved and Mixed Identity Preserved supply chains.
- Reports and data for company partners, including information that can support EUDR due diligence reporting and access to a public list of EUDR-aligned Certificate Holders.
- Training and support for farmers and supply chain partners navigating EUDR requirements.
Together, these tools help companies strengthen supply chain transparency, conduct risk assessments, and support their EUDR compliance efforts.
How your company can prepare for EUDR requirements
To meet the December 2026 deadline, companies should take these five measures to help facilitate compliance.
- Opt in to the Rainforest Alliance EUDR offering on the Rainforest Alliance Certification Platform (RACP). To leverage our EUDR offering, which provides access to EUDR-related data associated with your company’s supply chain, you must opt in to RACP.
- Prioritize “Identity Preserved” audits. Take immediate steps to enhance your company’s traceability efforts. You should include Identity Preserved and Mixed Identity Preserved volumes, if your customers would like to access EUDR-related data.
- Engage your farm base and other suppliers. Encourage and support your farm suppliers to fulfil the EUDR-aligned requirements. Ensure they understand what information is needed to do so. Encourage other suppliers to do the same and enhance their traceability efforts to include Identity Preserved and Mixed Identity Preserved audits.
- Facilitate geodata collection at the farm level. Actively support your supply base in the collection and submission of geospatial data for cocoa and coffee farm units, in line with EUDR-aligned requirements. Once uploaded, the Rainforest Alliance can accurately cross-reference post-2020 deforestation and conversion data against our deforestation risk maps. This provides a key resource your company can use as supporting compliance documentation.
- Clarify certification benefits. Ensure internal and external stakeholders understand how Rainforest Alliance certification can support you and your supply chain in EUDR compliance.
